Learning About the Three Telescope Types

Since the Renaissance, scientists have been using telescopes built originally by people who made glasses and made more efficient by the likes of Galileo. Telescopes use light and lenses to focus the light on objects in great detail. What happens to the light is it converges and you see an image that is much bigger than what you are actually looking at. The light is so focused and concentrated that you can see a small item clearly and in a large image. All telescopes work the same way, buy using focused light to enlarge images. There are actually three telescope types:

Refracting Telescopes

One of the telescope types is the refracting telescope. This type of telescope has curved mirrors that focus the light and enlarge the image instead of using lenses, which focus the light. The curved glass works the same way a prism does and bends the light which allows it to focus. Other common items that use light refraction are binoculars and the telephoto lenses for your camera.

Not all refracting telescopes are perfect, though, because a bad design can cause blurry images from the variations of colors that will be seen. This phenomenon is referred to as chromatic aberration. Spherical aberrations are also possible and they occur when the curved lenses are not perfect and light is reflected improperly. It is not possible to utilize the refracting telescope on a larger scale because the weight of the lenses causes distortion from sagging. This limits their usefulness for large scale scientific research projects.

Reflecting Telescopes

The second of the telescope types is the reflecting telescope. This type of telescope is similar to a refracting telescope except that the light does not go through a lens. Instead, light is reflected off mirrors made of curved glass. The first reflecting telescope was perfected by Isaac Newton after many attempts in earlier times to change the refracting telescope to a reflecting telescope. There is a reflecting telescope named after Isaac Newton to honor his contributions.

Between the two telescope types, reflecting telescopes are preferred by larger research labs instead of refracting telescopes. This is because the curved mirrors used in reflecting telescopes are properly supported from all sides instead of only on the edges so no sagging occurs. It is still possible to have spherical aberrations with reflecting telescopes, though, as well as a phenomenon called a coma where stars are distorted and appear pointed.

Catadioptric Telescopes

The third of the telescope types is the catadioptric telescope. This type of telescope uses the technology of both reflecting and refractive telescopes, which helps reduce or eliminate many of the problems the two have individually. The catadioptric telescope has a problem of its own, though. Since there is often an extra mirror in the tube where light would normally go through, it can reduce the light on the image.

The catadioptric telescope is a popular product because it is easy to manufacture and it can enlarge images to a great degree. These telescopes are meant more for the average person, though, than for scientists since most experts prefer reflective telescopes.

The catadioptric telescope combines the best of the other two telescope types into one model. It shows how far telescopes have come and the scientific improvements that have been made that allow this to happen. Telescopes are a great learning tool no matter which one you use and we can all learn from what they have to tell us about every day items.

The Meade Telescopes Company is a world leader
in the design and manufacture of telescopes and
accessories for amateur astronomers. The Meade
Company was founded in 1972 and went public in
1997. Meade Instruments began with only $2,500,
they used this capital as a mail-order supplier of
small refracting telescopes.

By 1977 the Meade Telescope Company was offering
a wide range of telescope parts and accessories.
Meade's range of accessories allowed them to
manufacture their own telescopes. Meade's first
models were the 628 and 826 6" and 8" reflecting
telescopes. American amateur astronomers found
that they had, really for the first time, a telescope
manufacturer that provided a quality product at a
reasonable price.

The 6" and 8" Meade reflecting telescopes were an
incredible success so much that the Meade Company
faced a 6-month backlog. Normally there is a 6 to 8
week delivery time, but the Meade Company still
wrote every customer explaining the backlog situation
of their telescopes, and offered a full and immediate
refund if the extra waiting time was unacceptable.

Few accepted the offer, and they were able to ship
all of the back-ordered telescopes.

In September 1980, Meade announced its new telescope,
Model 2080. Since that time Meade has come out with
exciting new telescopes and accessories. By 1986 Meade
Instruments was generally acknowledged as the largest,
and the leader in manufacturing serious telescopes.

Meade should be ashamed!
The purpose of a kit like is, one would think, to interest young people in the wondrous world of science. Unfortunately, the optics and quality of this set are SO BAD that it will do nothing but frustrate anyone and turn them AWAY from science! Meade has long had a reputation for quality scientific instruments but they risked that reputation with this inferior product. Granted, it's cheap, but what good is cheap if a child can't see anything through either the telescope OR the microscope?

You get what you pay for! Don't buy!
Purchased to show my nephew the wonders of the world magnified but the quality of the microscope is questionable because its hard to see anything using anything other than the x100 setting. Telescope has the same issue of low visual quality which is based on plastic lens being used and not glass. I took it apart and cleaned the lens inside the microscope and telescope which definitely helped but still not recommended since out of the box it doesn't really do what it should.

You get what you pay for
I guess you get what you pay for. For the price it has a lot of accessories i.e slides etc. The screws that are used to attach the telescope to the tripod are very small and dont really work. I had to replace them with larger bolts.

Pretty good, not perfect....
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 8 year-old daughter as she's very intrersted in sciencce and astronomy in particular. She wanted a telescope but I felt she was a bit too young and she can still look on when I use mine. The MySky Plus arrived yeasterday and I had read a lot of negative things about it on the internet so I wanted to try it last night to make sure it was working as advertised. The unit is very easy to understand, very intuitive. The directions are clear and concise. It started up without a problem and the screen was full and perfectly centered (a problem I had read about). As the first reviewer mentioned, there is no GPS on this unit. The GPS really only establishes the location of the user so if you are using the MySky within a 50 mile radius of your initial set up location, you really don't need the GPS feature. The first reviewer was right, the pick-list to choose your location is VERY long and tedious to navigate, but once it's done, you shouldn't have to do it again unless you use the unit in another state or very far away from home. The only object visible in the haze last night was the moon. The MySky correctly identified it when I pointed to it and it correctly found it when I searched the sky for it. Both were spot on with no pointing errors.

The only complaint I have is that the overall build quality is mediocre at best. It has a very flimsy feel to it and the buttons are cheaply made. It is very light and seems like it could break easily. At $149 it's a fair buy but at $399, the original price, it isn't worth it. I also own the Celestron SkyScout that I've had for about 2 years. It is made much better, more like a professional piece of equipment, but it doesn't have all the bells and whistles the MySky has. The MySky is a good, fun learning tool for kids and can also be used to point a Meade telescope. The SkyScout is more for adults (my kids don't think it's all that "cool").

Great idea - POORLY Executed
My first MySky had to be returned - it was literally falling apart in the box. When I finally received the second - it actually worked, but I had terrible problems trying to upgrade the software - SO... Meade replaced the entire unit. The replacement worked reasonably well - but I never was able to perform an upgrade of the unit's software.

I recently attempted to upgrade my replacement unit - and this time it actually worked. Except when I put the SD card with the upgraded software back in the MySky,I wound up with a calibration error. So - Meade replaced my MySky with a MySky Plus. What they fail to tell you is THEY SUBTRACT OUT THE GPS - and the only way to set the location is by scrolling through a long list of choices. There's no way to set your own longitude and latitude - so you have to use a nearby city.

Meade's customer service is pretty good - they certainly want to help. It's just that there's not much that can be done with a product that is fundamentally flawed. Unfortunately I have had it for over a year - so I have no further recourse.

The new unit works - but it is terribly inaccurate.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - I know I regret doing so.

We purchased the Meade LightBridge (8" Dobsonian) and have used it, albeit, sporadically, as the sky has been so overcast here in New England since early December, 2007. The ease of use is great. Size and portability very good, considering the mount type (Dob). Realize that you'll need other eye pieces for different magnifications. We purchased the Meade kit of 6 eye pieces with a barlow and some filters in a hard shell case..which was the way to go. All in all, we're pretty happy with this telescope. Finding Saturn is easy and it looks great with the additonal eye pieces we bought to complement the original purchase. This scope can realistically obtain magnifications up to about 400x. We had a little trouble with the focuser (Crayford style 2") but resolved it quickly with a call to Meade for technical assistance. I will post again later after we've had more experience with the product. Do keep in mind that this scope does not come with a computerized finder so you'll need to do some homework in order to find objects in the night sky. A lot of telescope for the money!

We found Saturn
We were skeptical of this telescope, but alas, we found Saturn by accident. It was truly amazing. We were expecting a little bit higher magnification, but it is great!

Excellent Product is used correctly
We have been using this product over a year now and here are the some major points to keep in mind.

1) Very good quality built product. Sturdy, starter lens are good enough if using to teach your kids how to look up Stars and Planets.
2a) Clarity of Lens is very good (note: Comes with 2 lenses). Not a high powered lens but good for the price.
2b) Very easy to read manual and detailed enough for starters. (If you feel you would like to explore more then get additional detailed print outs from the Internet or buy a guide on Planets and Stars.)
3) Little bulky, but powerful. There are new Meade's out there which are more compact with same size lens. That would be my next upgrade in couple of years. If you have money please feel free to upgrade.

Excellent scope for the price and size
This is a handy little scope for the price and size. It might not look like much or have some of the specs of larger scopes, but it's much easier to handle and assemble. The quality is pretty good - I've had no problems with parts or optics. The alignment is also fairly straight-forward.

It is a tad noisy, but that hasn't been a problem for me.

Wonderful starting telescope
With this set-up, you have a lot of bells and whistles for a great price. The instructions are very easy, but if you do have some problems, the remote is likely to step you through everything and take the guess work out. If set up properly, it will navigate to any of over 1000 locations with just a touch of a button. You can also plug it into your computer for software updates.
I have had no issues with this telescope and my whole family looks forward to clear nights so we can look at the moon, stars and planets a little closer and share in God's creation. Enjoy!

The AutoStar is junk. Next to impossible to align. Totaly Impossible to stay aligned. I spent hours setting up to spend 5 seconds viewing. Absolutly no support either.

Very nice for a beginner
I've bought mine when I did not know anything about astronomy. It is an amazing toy for an intelligent person. I thought that my 10 year old son will play with it, but it is over his head, I am actually playing with it. It is a completely automatic scope, i.e. after alignment is complete, it will guide you through the sky, and show you anything which is in it's database and above the horizon. The scope comes with a hand-held device "Autostar" which is a computer with a built database and 2-line alphanumerical display. It is menu-driven, and very easy to understand and operate after reading a manual for 10 minutes.
In order to complete an alignment, the telescope goes to where it "thinks" a bright start is and it tells you which start is it, and you have to align the scope to point to that start exactly. In order to do it, you have to have some idea about bright stars and constellations above you. The telescope was reasonably easy to drive from my lab-top, after I've got an Autostar software from Meade and a connecting cable. I had some trouble with the main mirror - when I focus the scope, the image moves somewhat, so I guess, for a higher quality one has to spend more money. What this scope is NOT good for is astrophotography. Even though I was able to mount my digital camera on it, and even take few pictures of Saturn, Jupiter and moon, results are not impressive, you need a bigger scope, more rigid mouts and tripod, and preferably, on German mount, not on a fork mount. But this 5-in scope is just not designed for that, so be realistic. However, when used as a beginner's scope, it is very good, and lot's of fun. However, one has to have lot's of patience, some knowledge of sky. Meade customer service is OK, easy to reach and helpful. I am now thinking about buying a bigger one.

Meade EXT125EC /uhtc w/ autostar
A novice to astronomy i bought this unit with extra bells and whistles, thinking it would be a good intro to astronomy. I am completely disappointed and would never recommend it to anyone for any purpose other then a door stop. Unless you already have some knowledge of telescopes avoid it at all costs. Set up is difficult to impossible, and what eventually appears is not much better then what you can already see on a clear night. As far as i am concerned this purchase was a waste of money.

Good telescope for the beginner
This is an acceptable scope if you get it for $250 or less. If you intend to spend more than that, get yourself an 8" or 10" dobsonian.
After using it for a few months, I now realise that its not the electronics and motors that matter in a good telescope, but the optics for a beginner. The 4.5" primary mirror is good enough for planetary / lunar observation. The eyepieces that come with this scope are just acceptable, and I can afford to have kids smear jam and butter on them. For my own use, I use a set of Series 4000 plossls I purchased separately.
I do want to add that Meade customer service is excellent. If I were to purchase a higher end scope, I would go to Meade. Primarily because of their superb customer service.

Poor quality, not worth the money
I bought this telescope 2 months ago from a local telescope shop. I wanted a simple "GO TO" telescope and I did not want to spend top dollars for my first scope. while unpacking the scope I made an observation that the primary tube was not packed very well (only one layer of bubble wrap), in any case assembling the scope took about an hour and the first time I started using it I realized the scope motor was failing to engage the lever responsible for the vertical motion (up and down) I packed the scope back in the box and asked the store for a replacement. This is when it gets really interesting; I opened the box, unwrapped the tube and heard something jiggling inside the tube. The secondary mirror has come lose and was hitting the primary mirror and damaged it, so I decided to try to swallow my frustration and attempt to fix it which I did ,I glued it back, looked though he provided 25 mm eye piece and could not notice any scratches, so I continued with the assembling the rest. I took the mount with the motor from it's box and it was broken in half, at that point I realized that this "THING" is not worth my time, I went back to the store returned it and got a Celestron GT114. All I can say about my experience with the Celestron is it's cheaper, far better quality, arrived very well Collimated.
took me 10 minutes to assemble. If you are looking for a good quality beginner telescope that would be satisfactory for a long time go with the Celestron GT114, or GT130.

Damaged during shipment
I ordered the Meade DS2114ATS Telescope through Amazon.com, but it was actually shipped by J&R Music and Computer World (JR.com). It only took a couple of days for the telescope to arrive, but unfortunately it had been damaged during shipping. The smaller, secondary mirror had becomed detached from its mount and was bouncing around inside the tube. As a result the secondary mirror was chipped around the edges, and the primary mirror had numerous scratches.

The telescope seemed to be packed well for shipping and there was no apparent damage to the outside of the box. The main tube of the telescope was packed in three levels of boxes. My impression is that Meade's process of gluing the secondary mirror to its mount just isn't strong enough to withstand the rigors of shipping. I decided the quality of the telescope was not quite what I had expected. I returned it to J&R and requested a full refund which I received about 3 weeks later. After doing some more howework, I have decided to try ordering my next scope from Orion.

A nice starter piece with great potential
I purchased this as my (our) first telescope. I have three children ranging from age 14 to 4, this was a gift for the summer and it's turned out really well.

The product itself is truly nice, works great for viewing the stars plus...

My biggest complaint now comes with the whole star drive system (AutoStar). The alignment process will take you first time around, about 1/2 an hour or so just to familiarize yourself with all the components (READ THE MANUAL). This is NOT an open the box and go system, so don't expect to put the pieces together and just begin. This system is more of a mid-range system, certainly not for those who have years of experience viewing the solar system and stars.

The drive functions are interesting. There is always the realignment process, since you are never really looking from the same spot each time. So configure it once, configure it twice and keep right on going per use. Might have been better to build in compass with alignment points.... or...

Viewing is incredible, clear, crisp and detailed. I am throughly impressed with the optics.

As I previously stated, a nice starter system for a family to begin viewing. However, I have already begun looking are far more sophisticated products and with my experiences in hand will find a system somewhat more expensive but with the features I believe would be more useful.

My new ETX90 PE did not work (it would ALMOST "go to"); I sent it to Meade. Meade returned it to me; still bad. They sent me (exchange)another EXT90 PE; it had the same problem. They sent me a third (exchange); it failed in the initial start up. I sent it back and have not heard from them since.

Now they have my scope & I have a tripod and some assessories, but at least I don't have that frustrating piece of (OK, clean it up, Ed) that Meade seems unable to fix.

I talked with a Meade representative and he assured me for my camera make and model, that it would fit. However it was WAY too small.

If you have a dSLR or SLR that is 35mm, it will most likely fit. Unless you have a threaded lens or lens mount, you will need an additional adapter.

Good optical quality but very unstable mount. Fortunately, it is very portable so you can pick it up and walk around with it. I took some photos of the moon and venus. I have seen Jupiter and Saturn as well. I am not sure how to take other kinds of pictures, if there is an adapter for a digital camera. There may be some color filters that you can use with this also.

Good all-around set.
Set features great eyepieces that have good field of view. Lower power lenses reveal great details of the moon and are ideal for 'calibrating' your spotting scope. Set's increments are very useful for stepping up magnifications of Saturn, other planets or the moon. Very easy to go 40mm to 32mm to 15mm to 12.4mm to 9.7mm to 6.4mm with focus and center technique greatly alleviating frustration and taking minimal time.
Definitely recommend the set based on the increments alone, quality is above average for a set in this price range. I guess the only hit I have is eyepieces could be identified more readily. Font on eyepieces is small and hard to see in the dark.

Terrific Set!
My husband gave me a really nice telescope for Christmas. I wanted some better lenses to view planets so I searched around online. I found this set on the manufacturer's website and found it to be a few dollars cheaper here on Amazon. I'm very pleased with this set. The lenses are nice and heavy, the case is terrific and keeps each lens sealed tightly so that they can't move around. Great variety of lenses, heavy and much better quality than the ones that came with my Meade telescope.

Not a refractor
The only problem (if you can call it that) is that this telescope, while listed as a refractor scope, is actually a reflector telescope. If you're looking for a refractor telescope you'll have to look elsewhere.

This was easy to assemble; it took us all of 15 minutes. That's not bad, since no one in my family has ever used a telescope. If you know what you're doing it can probably be put together in a fraction of that time.

We purchased this item as a birthday gift for my seven-year-old. He loves it, and is eager to learn about astronomy.

Great first telescope for the price
I took a chance on ordering this because it is actually a refractor telescope, (not what is pictured) which is what I was looking for. I was hoping they shipped by the part number 90AZ-ADR, which was the part number of the telescope I wanted. I did get the one I wanted and am very pleased. It is very heavy duty. A little bigger than I expected. Mostly all metal, very little plastic. It is well worth the price. We used it to look at the lunar eclipse and it worked well. We have also used it to watch the deer in the field near our house.

This is doesn't seem to be a real product
Somehow Amazon has managed to put a title referring to a Reflector Telescope, a picture of an enormous Meade reflector but coupled it with nonsensical data such as a completely incorrect weight and details pertaining to what seems to be a 90 mm REFRACTOR. Might be a good idea to double check and/or proofread your item descriptions, Amazon. Jeez.

This seems like a great product. Everything is of good quality, but either I'm stupid or you have to be a rocket scientist to figure out how to run it. Don't know how to line up the red light that it talks about. I can't even see anything through it - maybe I'm not looking in the right place???? Good beginner scope
If you can catch this on sale for about $75 its an excellant scope. Regular price of $100 or so, its a good scope. ;) This is a good starter scope. The optics are excellant. The fine adjustment controls take a lot to get used to but are much better than not having them. The red dot finder is an excellant feature. Bit of vibration when making fine adjustments but it settles down quickly. (ballast bag may help) All in all, for backyard sky viewing, it is very good.

My husband and I LOVE this thing! It's perfect for beginners. We look at the moon all the time. I can't seem to find any planets but I haven't watched the CD that came with the product either (which I need to do ASAP). Totally worth it and such a cool gift. Oh, and easy set-up.

Not worth the money!
Horrible tripod. Not very secure on mount. Easily shifts or moves making it difficult to keep objects in focus or in view. Bought it for my daughter for Christmas and was extremely disappointed with its cheap plastic construction. I don't recommend you waste your money.

Good telescope for the price range.
The telscopse is good, The backpack is useless but I would recomend a case for the telescope anyway. I would seriously reccomend, if you buy this telescope, you get some rechargable AA batteries. I got like 12 of them. The autostar is a little complicated at first, so use in inn the daytime first.

Pleased, with one drawback
The product works great! The only drawback is the free backpack. It's too small for the telescope. I would have liked for the backpack to fit the telescope b/c it would be easier to store.
